ToolBook Instructor is designed for use by a broad spectrum of course developers, instructional designers and trainers. If you are new to developing online learning applications, you'll find that Instructor's easy-to-use features will get you more quickly on your way to producing standards-based interactive courses.
More experienced course developers will appreciate the robust, object oriented authoring environment of Instructor, its integrated learning management system capabilities, the Actions Editor visual programming tool, the powerful scripting capabilities, and a variety of other design options.
Integrated Learning Management System
Instructor includes a Web-based learning management system that allows you to
launch, track and analyze course progress for up to one hundred users (with
upgrade options available for more users). This ASP-based learning management
system allows content created with Instructor and other popular applications,
including Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint, to be easily published and
used in learning initiatives.
Web Deployment Without Plug-ins
Instructor allows you to deliver your e-Learning content on the Internet or an
intranet, a local area network (LAN), or on a CD-ROM. Instructor can
automatically convert your content to DHTML, allowing you to bring a high level
of interactivity to your Web-based courseware without requiring the use of
plug-ins.
Create Custom Action Sequences and Interact With Backend Databases
The Actions Editor is a visual programming tool in Instructor that you can use
to create sophisticated interactive behavior that exports to the Web in DHTML.
The HTTP Post action, for example, allows you to pass course information to a
database residing on your Web site. The Actions Editor is designed to give
nonprogrammers a programmer's level of control over object behavior.
An Extensible Object-Oriented Development Environment
Instructor includes the powerful OpenScript programming language with hundreds
of built-in functions, a fully integrated script editor, a script debugger and
object browsers. OpenScript can be used for creating custom learning objects,
preparing simulations, utilizing ActiveX controls, and creating other types of
object behavior. Applications that include OpenScript code can be delivered over
the Internet as a native Instructor application using the Neuron browser
plug-in, or it can be delivered as a native Instructor application over an
intranet or on a CD-ROM.
Strong e-Learning Standards Support
Instructor provides support for the SCORM tracking standards, as well as AICC
and LRN. With this rich level of standards support, you can be safe in knowing
that your e-Learning content can be deployed, managed and tracked by any
standards-based learning management system.
Extending Instructor's capabilities
Instructor provides support for ActiveX, OLE, ActiveX Data objects (ADO),
Automation, and Dynamic Data Exchange(DDE). Using these technologies, you can
extend Instructor's capabilities and enable the sharing of data with other
programs.
e-Learning Authoring Made Easy
Instructor allows anyone to create and deliver effective online training and
educational content quickly, easily, and economically. Using Instructor's
intuitive drag and drop interface, trainers, subject matter experts, and
educators-virtually anyone with information to share-can create high-quality
e-Learning content.
The catalog contains the authoring objects you use to build your interactive content-assessment objects, media players, navigation panels, and other interactive objects, many with predefined behavior that you can customize. To include an object, you simply drag it from the catalog to your page or background. In addition, Instructor's Book Specialists save you time by automating the task of creating the layout of your e-Learning content. The wizard-like Specialists prompt you for choices about how you want your e-Learning content to appear and behave.
Assessment Objects
Instructor has over ten assessment object types-true/false, multiple choice,
drag and drop, match item, essay and more-that test your users on their
understanding of your content. These objects have built-in behavior that
provides feedback to your users and supplies you with information about how your
users respond to these questions.
Rich Media Support and Professional Templates
Instructor allows you to play a wide variety of media files, including sound,
animation, digital video, streaming media, and still images. Instructor supports
Flash animation files, RealPlayer and Windows Media Player formats, and numerous
other popular file formats, such as GIF and JPEG files.
Instructor contains over thirty professionally designed templates that assist you in creating effective e-Learning content. In addition to using the pre-built templates, you can also create your own custom templates tailored to your own training practices and custom look-and-feel.
Animation Capabilities
You can use Instructor's animation features to add visual impact to your
e-Learning content, including simulations of how objects change or move over
time. Instructor has both path-based animation and cel-based animation to allow
you to easily create compelling animations for use in your e-Learning content.
